As Bloomsburg Fair’s Superintendent of Livestock, I am pleased to invite you to visit our area located at the southwest end of the Fairgrounds on Avenue “F”. This year we’ve gotten a lot of painting and other needed repairs done in the Livestock area. This all adds to the overall attractiveness of the Fairgrounds.
Features this year include miniature horses, a team of oxen, and a team of Belgian Draft Horses. Other attractions in the Livestock area include Lynch’s Border Collies performing each day, a 4-H Poster Contest being held Monday at 7:00 pm, Agility Dogs performing on Tuesday and Friday at 7:00 pm all in the Large Arena, and a demonstration by Gensemer’s Meat Company on Wednesday at 10 am in the Small Arena. Livestock competitions will be held daily in the Large and Small Arenas.
4-H members will compete in giving short seminars on the attributes and uses of their animals. These seminars will be judged by spectators. Be a part of the Fair by helping to judge the 4-H Speech Contests. Check at the Livestock Office for timer and sites. On Friday at the grandstand see light- and heaveyweight horse pulling. Pony pulling is held Saturday in the Large Arena. Always popular with both pullers and fans, announcer Jeff Giger will be on hand for the pulls.
4-H Club Members, who this year are celebrating 105 years as an organization devoted to farming and many other pursuits, will be offering you the opportunity to have your picture taken with a calf, lamb, horse, pig, or goat. Watch dairy cows being milked at the milking parlor located in the large cattle barn- and take note of the outstanding life-size wall mural.
Children may play in the “corn box”, and the “Parade Cow” named “2004 Fair’s Optimism” is back again. Enjoy the beautiful fountain, benches and flower boxes decorating the Livestock area. The maintenance crew put in many hours of work on these items - if you see them around the grounds, tell them how much you appreciate their hard work! Many thanks go to the Board of Directors for their support of the Livestock Department. The Board recognizes the importance of continuing to improve the Agricultural areas for future generations to keep agriculture as a mainstay in their daily lives.
Growing up on a farm, my brother John and I learned about dairy cattle, the importance of farming, 4-H, co-operation among family and neighbors, and one of our greatest pleasures - The Bloomsburg Fair Livestock Department, from our Dad, J. Fred Giger. The Bloomsburg Fair, and particularly this Department, has always been a major part of all our lives. I am very pleased to welcome you to the 153rd edition of the great Bloomsburg Fair! Please stop at the Livestock Office in the large cattle barn with any questions or suggestions and to say “Hello”. I’m looking forward to seeing you. HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE BLOOMSBURG FAIR.
